Local Information and History of La Quinta

The beautiful and diverse City of La Quinta is nestled in the foothills of the scenic Santa Rosa Mountains, in the heart of the Coachella Valley. Incorporated in 1982, La Quinta is recognized for its world- class golf events, thriving arts community and phenomenal growth. La Quinta's extraordinary growth can be attributed to the unparalleled lifestyle that the City offers its residents. The beautiful mountain vistas, abundant recreation opportunities and the variety of available housing have attracted new residents to the City. The expanding population has, in turn, attracted successful commercial growth.

  • Agricultural efforts began with cotton, cattle and sugar cane in the 19th century.
  • Walter Morgan opened the La Quinta Hotel in December 1926.
  • The City of La Quinta was incorporated in May, 1982.

Weather

The beautiful near-perfect desert climate offers a year-round respite to visitors from around the world. With only 15-20 days of rainfall per year averaging a total of 5.78 inches, dry air and low humidity, there is fun in the sun by day and balmy desert evenings to enjoy to the fullest. From fall through late spring, days are warm and nights are cool. Summer days are hotter, but clean, dry air makes the higher temperature feel comfortable. Dress is California Casual, from cutoffs and thongs to designer sportswear by day and the whole fashion spectrum by night. Some restaurants require jackets for gentlemen, check when making a reservation. A cover-up and sun lotion are essential by the pool and a light wrap at night is a must. Temperatures are 30-40 degrees lower at the top of the Palm Springs Aerial Tramway and the Alpine community of Idyllwild, so dress accordingly. Call 345-3711.
